Heads up - Fake UPS email

Heads up everyone - this email is so simple to fall for if you are not paying attention. Many folks are falling for it.

What Happened?

Subject: UPS Delivery Problem NR 93709

Dear customer!

Unfortunately we failed to deliver your postal package sent on the 18th of March in time because the addressee's address is incorrect.
Please print out the invoice copy attached and collect the package at our department.

DHL Services.

How do I know that it's fake?

  • it has a .zip file as an attachment. NEVER NEVER NEVER open a zip file unless you KNOW that someone is sending it to you. Most companies will have all the info you need right in the body of the email where it is safe
  • the subject is from UPS and it's signed by DHL
  • it does not reference a tracking number
  • they failed to deliver a "postal" package (subtle translation issue - the USPS is "postal")
  • it does not show the address it was trying to deliver to
  • UPS or DHL or FedEx will leave a note on your door to inform you they were there and couldn't deliver - they don't have your email address...
  • they may have the email address of the sender and inform them of a problem - but they will NOT send something as an attachment

Remember - stop and think before ever opening an attachment, and NEVER open a zip file unless you are expecting it.

Why didn't my anti-virus program catch it?
